It is said that during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), the pub was given the name “The Confession Box.“
During that time, a controversial excommunication related to the rebellion occurred in Ireland, with the Catholic Church targeting men involved in the uprising. One of the first to face the pressure of excommunication during the war was Bishop Daniel Cohalan of Cork. He became known for his strong stance against the violence of the rebellion, and it is also heard that he excommunicated prominent figures, including the famous Corkonian, Michael Collins. Rumors suggest that many of these prominent figures, including Michael Collins, would frequently visit the “Maid of Erin” pub, where sympathetic priests from the nearby Pro-Cathedral would secretly administer confessions and Communion to them.
