Killarney is a beautiful town in County Kerry on the southwest coast of Ireland. I think, one of the highlight (often underrated) “things” of Killarney is the Deenagh Lodge.
Visiting Killarney, you can expect stunning views everywhere you go, of mountains, lakes, and forests, and Deenagh Lodge is a perfect spot to immerse yourself in its beauty. as this town is surrounded by over 26,000 acres of national parkland, Killarney National Park, where you’re likely to see local wildlife like deer, rabbits, eagles and more.
Deenagh Lodge is an Ornate Cottage that was built in 1834 and was originally the gate lodge of the Kenmare Estate. It sits at the entrance to what is now Killarney National Park. From early April to September yearly, it is occupied by Down Syndrome Kerry, This organization not only adds a layer of community involvement to the lodge but also offers visitors the opportunity to support a worthy cause while enjoying the hospitality of this unique establishment. Knowing that by stepping through its doors, you’re not only experiencing its unique ambiance but also contributing to a meaningful cause, adds an extra layer of satisfaction to the experience. who are ready to quench the thirst and assuage the hunger of anyone who steps through the door.
Knockreer House, a short walk up the hill, is the Killarney National Park Education Centre and is built on the site of the original Killarney House, which was destroyed by fire in 1913. The circular walk is signposted and offers excellent views of the Lower Lake. Its location, atop the hill overlooking the Lower Lake, provides not only a scenic vantage point but also a sense of connection to the past, as it occupies the site of the original Killarney House.
Down Syndrome Kerry operates a beautiful tearooms from Deenagh Lodge in the National Park in Killarney during the summer months. It’s a prime example of how community engagement and support can be seamlessly integrated into everyday activities, enriching both the visitor experience and the organization’s efforts. This endeavor not only provides a charming setting for visitors to enjoy delicious refreshments but also supports the organization’s mission in a meaningful way.
This project was set up to train young adults in this line of work to help them gain employment within the hospitality sector. This project not only provides valuable vocational training but also empowers individuals with Down syndrome to develop valuable skills and gain meaningful employment opportunities. The training they receive not only enhances their skill set but also instills confidence and a sense of purpose, paving the way for greater independence and integration into the workforce.
They serve teas and coffees, along with sandwiches (both toasted and non-toasted), soup, fresh pastries, yummy scones, cakes, and tarts. For those seeking a light meal, both toasted and non-toasted sandwiches provide a satisfying option, perfect for a quick bite between explorations of the national park. Whether you’re in the mood for a light snack or a more substantial meal, there’s something on the menu to tempt your taste buds.
They also serve cold drinks and ice cream if you happen to be there on one of our rare hot days.
The Ornate Cottage is situated across from the well-known St. Mary’s Cathedral at the entrance to Killarney National Park.
It was originally built with a beautiful thatched roof, which is still part of its picturesque charm to this day. The thatch originally consisted of hollow river reed, this traditional roofing material not only lends a rustic beauty to the lodge but also serves a practical purpose. which offered excellent insulation to keep the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

What is the goal of the Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms?
The main aim here at the Deenagh Lodge is to set up training for our young Down Syndrome adults who are 18+ years, old to eventually move out into mainstream work in their communities. There are approximately 30 Down Syndrome adults employed at the lodge offering meaningful work experiences and interactions with customers, the lodge creates a nurturing environment where individuals can develop essential skills and build confidence. The social aspect of dealing with people is hugely important. This year there will be an Instructional Coach on board, hands-on in reaching that goal of employment for our Down Syndrome adults, whose parents travel to The Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms from as far as Listowel, Causeway, Limerick and Cork,” Norma explained.
What is the Easiest Walk Near Deenagh Lodge?
The Circular Walk Trail around part of the park begins and ends at Deenagh Lodge. As you embark on this trail, you’ll find yourself immersed in the beauty of the park, with panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and mountains unfolding before you. The expansive stretches of grassland provide a tranquil backdrop, inviting you to pause and soak in the natural splendor. This walk is among the easiest to access in Killarney National Park, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and mountains, expansive stretches of grassland, and a nearly certain sighting of the resident red deer herd.
The whole path is paved and has clear directions marked along the way. After winding around Knockreer, the path opens up to spectacular views of the MacGillycuddy Reeks and Lough Leane. After crossing a stretch of open parkland, you have the option of returning directly to Deenagh Lodge or continuing down the Riverbank Path. All ages and skill levels are welcome on this walk, and it is bike and buggy-friendly. The fact that the path is paved and well-marked with clear directions ensures that everyone can navigate the trail with ease, regardless of their level of hiking experience. The path then meanders through open parkland, offering a peaceful setting for a stroll or a bike ride.
Spraoi Chiarrai
If you visit Deenagh Lodge over the summer you might be lucky enough to see Spraoi Chiarrai, a Kerry-based youth group specializing in Irish folk and traditional music as well as song, dance, and storytelling. Experiencing a performance by Spraoi Chiarrai adds an extra layer of cultural enrichment to your visit to Deenagh Lodge, allowing you to immerse yourself in the vibrant heritage of Ireland.
They hold free outdoor concerts every summer and if you can take one in you should, they are great!
How To Get To Deenagh Lodge?
Deenagh Lodge is about a 4-hour drive if you are going from the city center in Dublin. A car is the easiest option (if you can rent one or have one) – as this will cost you the least time + money.
However, that’s not the only option.
If you feel fancy, a flight from Dublin to Kerry only takes about 50 minutes and is quite cheap too. Ryanair runs them. Of course, you won’t be taking a flight to go see Deenagh Lodge alone, however, if you have plans to stay around Killarney then this might be an option worth exploring.
If you want to rely on public transport, head over to Heuston Station and take the train to Killarney. It is a 3-hour train ride with absolutely breathtaking views.
And Deenagh Lodge is only a 20-minute walk from the Killarney train station once you reach there. The Deenagh Lodge is the natural start/finish point for most following the Circular Walk trail. This is located at the entrance to Killarney National Park directly opposite St. Mary’s Cathedral, about a 10-minute walk from Killarney town centre.
