The origin of the name “Ballybunion” indeed carries a fascinating piece of local history. Legend has it that the town was named after the Bunion family, who were prominent figures in the area during the 15th century.

In 1893, the course was founded with only 12 holes. Founded in 1893 with a modest 12-hole layout, the course quickly gained a reputation for its challenging terrain and stunning coastal views. However, just five years later, in 1898, the club faced financial difficulties and was forced to close its doors. Despite this setback, the spirit of Ballybunion endured, and in 1906, the club was re-established, signaling a new chapter in its storied history. designed by the prominent Irish golf journalist Lionel Hewson.
